Celebrity Obsession
As a transplanted Canadian, living in California I have made a cultural observation and it has to do with the obsession with celebrities.[
Celebrities of Every ILK...
Hollywood Stars, TV, Sports figures completely rule the hair fashion world, lifestyle and interest of such a high percentage of the public. Let me add that I have no issues with clients wanting to sport the latest Hollywood style or colour because frankly when Victoria Beckham, first cut her amazing graduated bob it brought all of us a breath of fresh air and hair to cut.
I will say because I’m in Southern California it’s more obvious but I’m sure it has trickled into other parts of the country and in major cities. My friends and colleagues have told me that this is not a new phenomenon but here is what has changed……AND I FEEL IT’S COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL!
Why?
It seems like without a celebrity as part of your clientele or if you are not involved in one way or another with the red carpet scene, than you are just not connected. I can confidently say there is NO magical link between having skill or vision by having celebrity clients.
So enough of my view point, lately I have been asking many stylist friends, acquaintances and non-celebrity clients if they in fact see the same thing or feel differently than I do about “celebrity emphasis”.
In my simple survey another dimension was added:
In cities like Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Chicago or Toronto your banking institution may not be as supportive with loans if you don’t have a celebrity clientele???
I strongly feel that if our great craft made up of passionate hairdressers across North America
It should definitely embrace all customers that walk into their salons and should continue to enable and empower tomorrows’ hairdressers while still enjoying a fruitful and rewarding career regardless of how famous your clients are.
I am in the middle of a crazy inspirational schedule across North America and will be sending you Hair Nerds pics and more of my observations…..Peace!
