Edna Lugo- Cut Hair Like Female

When we found out Edna Lugo would be teaching at Hair Camp we immediately decided to stalk her. While she never went to Summer Camp as a kid, she is pumped to hang out. In the words of Hairbrained, “Her trend-setting work and punk rock inspired aesthetic will spark your creativity.” Edna is an independent stylist and the creator of the apparel and accessories brand Cut Hair Like Female. Edna is an innovator, and has no shortage of creative talents – stylist, photographer, musician, designer to name just a few.

Tell us a bit about what you are going to be sharing/teaching at Hair Camp.

I’m teaching Be Your Brand! and sharing my journey with Cut Hair Like Female, CHLF salon, and ByCHLF product line. The class includes a look-n-learn and a hands on segment.  Students will learn techniques to be a strong colorist as well as a precision cutter (being able to do both has helped me in my career behind the chair and as a platform artist), photo technique-how to capture and style your model/client for the final look pic. We will also discuss the workflow between social media and running a salon and how to make your money work for you towards bringing short term goals into reality.

If you had to sum up your Hair Journey in 3 sentences or less, what would they be?

True to myself.

Having a good time.

Working hard.

What advice would you go back and give yourself advice in cosmetology school?

One day, you’ll wake up and realize that you weren’t the only one dreaming. So be considerate of other peoples dreams, since in life we all might cross paths eventually while sleepwalking.

What is the most striking issue in the industry? Thoughts on fixing it?

In my experience, I’ve encountered that there’s a lack of trust caused by the competitive nature of our job. That feeling cannot be fixed since thats just part of being human, but it can be softened with community driven activities or events, such as Haircamp.  I believe that’s one of the reasons why education has become much more popular in later years.

Why is education so important to you?

Because it’s a way of being reminded that we share the world with people that might have the same talents and/or goals and the process of learning from each other only makes us stronger professionally.

3 hairdressers dead or alive you would love to work with…

浦さやか (@urarararaura ) – Met her on my trip to Japan and can’t wait to go back and collaborate with her.  She has an amazing sense of color/cut balance, inspired by Harajuku culture.

Karen Vu (@__k_vu__)- We’re instagram friends, she’s the assistant art director of Sassoon Toronto, she has a unique style, and I believe she has all that it takes to do big things.

Angela Ursick (@angangela_ursick_ ) – Runs her own salon out of Split, Croatia and she’s just straight up cool.  We’ve known each other for quite a while and we would of collaborated a long time ago if it wasn’t for the distance between us; her in Croatia and myself in California.  Still waiting for that magic day though. (OMG We are totally obsessed with her too!!!)

Which educator are you most excited to see at Hair Camp?

Shannel Mariano – I’ve only seen her attending classes so I’m excited to see her as an Educator.  She has also been a strong Cut Hair Like Female supporter and I appreciate her very much.

I knew I was a Hair Nerd when…

I cut my own hair with paper scissors to give myself a bob and made my mom cry.  I was 13 then :p.
