Give us your life story in 3 sentences or less.
Hair is in every aspect of my life! I passed the state board test the summer before senior year of high school and never looked back. After more than 30 years I love and respect this career and the hair community more than ever.
As a salon owner, what do you find to be the biggest misconception?
That our job is easy. Is it fun? Hell yes! Being behind the chair is hard work mentally and physically, though. At the end of the day you have to have something left in your tank for your staff. Owning a salon is just like riding a rollercoaster. The highest of highs and some lows, you can feel isolated and not sure where to find information. We are lucky at True to have each other for that and truly enjoy sharing information and inspiration that we have learned through our experiences with other owners.
What holes did you see in the industry that led you to create TRUE Education?
Being unbranded is so important to us. By teaching the chemistry of hair you give stylists the control back. They understand how products work, product categories, ingredients, formulate better, have more confidence talking to clients. I see it in my own staff. This type of education is what stylists deserve.
Why should stylists choose TRUE Education?
We are completely relatable. We encounter all of the same struggles as other salon owners and stylists and do not try to hide that. We want other owners, stylists and salon mangers to know that they are not alone. We do all of those jobs and want to help other stylists. By making our community stronger we all grow together. It seems like right now that is more important than ever.
You are a member of ABCH. What did the journey through membership look like? Why should others join?
Being a member of ABCH was a great way to start to look at products through our unbranded goggles. Studying for and passing the test breaks down all of the hype about color and allows you to understand it in the most basic, raw way. I have attended several Energizing Summits and last year was at The Balayage Summit, both hosted by ABCH. I love the no non-sense education style that they use. NO hype, all education, with some of the most amazing educators.
If you could go back in time and give cosmetology student you one piece of advice, what would it be?
This one is easy as I sit on the advisory board for my local Technical HS, that I attended. Typically I go in at least twice a year to meet with and teach the students. My first piece of advice is to learn customer service, think about how you want to be treated. The appointment is not about you it's about them (this also helps relieve their nerves). I honestly feel as though you can teach people to do hair but it's very hard to teach someone to be a people person.
3 hairdressers (dead or alive) you would love to work with and why
The wonderful Mr.Martin Parsons. He was such a performer as well as an educator. He made the whole room laugh while you learned. He was incredibly talented. Did you know he designed and sewed all of his models gowns himself??? You never wonder he loved his job, a true class act.
Another is Keya Neal. I have been lucky to spend time with Keya and attend her classes. Her drive, passion and work ethic are beyond. I learn something every time I am around her. She is kind funny and graceful and I simply can not get enough.
I knew I was a Hair Nerd when
I discovered the science of hair. When I began (still on the journey) to really learn and ask questions. When I learned science based information everything changed for me. I could figure out why things happened, avoid other outcomes and formulate better. It just feels so good to have that knowledge.
