DKoye Does Drag Race
When you become the image of your own imagination it’s the most powerful thing you could ever do. -RuPaul
That’s what our friend, Daniel Koye, has done for himself. He has created a brand from the ground up, covered it in rhinestones and made sure to be true to himself during the process. Having roots deep in the Drag community, he knew RuPaul’s Drag Race was something he wanted to be a part of on a different level than as a performer, but as a Sponsor. We love his brand, DKoye, and can’t wait for the world to experience the glam.
What about RuPaul’s Drag Race made you want to sponsor it?
IT’S ALL ABOUT being creative!! Sponsoring Rupaul’s Drag race is only the perfect fit for DKOYE: The Product. The rhinestones and the quality… Ru is the best of the best in drag.
You were on-site for the first challenge… thoughts on hair?
You will have to watch Monday, March 2nd to see if you spot me! :::::wink wink:::
What I can tell you is the first challenge was amazing. The tension in the air was so thick! Each girl has their own unique look to them it’s so great to see the different types of drag. I had a blast working with all of the girls and have loved getting feedback on how the products worked for them throughout the duration of filming. The Gel and The Control have become favorites.
Tell us about your adventures in Drag!
Drag days… When I was going to cosmetology school I would perform at night and have traveled all over to compete. Drag really helped me hone my craft and to find out who I really am.
We were learning the basics and then we would have time to do “creative roller sets” and that is where I perfected and created new hair techniques to use later that night for when I performed. Creating larger than life hair that’s why Drag queen are so elaborate and mesmerizing.
The real reason for the immense creation is to make a man’s features softer and smaller. Bigger hair; smaller face… longer hair; softer jawline (with a ton of contour, of course). Long nails; smaller hands…. HUGE jewelry makes the hands look smaller and hip pads give the body an hour glass shape.
When I first started, I would do a “snatch back” where you slick your short hair back into a ponytail and put an inside out wig and pin that to your hair then put a wig over the “bun” that will give you more height and an amazing pony tail You just can’t go wrong with a high pony.
Do you feel like it has made you a better hairdresser/ makeup artist?
“If you can make huge hair look amazing you can make people’s everyday hair stunning”. It has made be a better and more creative hair designer. If you have to make a huge masterpiece of hair using extentions and 3 or 4 wigs to make one wig will only help making my clients as creative as I can get. Having to be so over dramatic and “painting” to make a man’s face look soft like a women is an art form. Wait till you see some of the body contours. (yup spoiler) It’s going to be a jaw dropping season!
What can Hair Nerds expect from this season’s drag race?
“Realness just got Realer”- RuPaul You just never know what Ru is going to come out with… Talk about creativity outside of the box! You will see more lace wigs than you can imagine. Check the hairline! Get ready for awesome contours and makeup tricks.
