Francis Tuttle Tech Center Installs Freestylists for Students
Beauty is a full-time job, and Dennese King, Cosmetology Instructor at Francis Tuttle Technology Center, has devoted her life to training salon professionals to bring more beauty into the world. She has seen the resources available to cosmetology students advance greatly to match those in other professional settings to ensure expertise at certification...and it's helping to draw more young people into the salon professional industry.
"Social media and technology are continually evolving and have opened up so many more opportunities in cosmetology and related fields," explains King. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment growth rate for barbers, hairstylists and cosmetologists is 19% between 2020 and 2030, much higher than the average growth rate of 8%.
The world is a different place today, every little detail matters when attracting new students, especially when it comes to technology and safety, which are now important aspects of the beauty industry.
"We installed Freestylists at the center for safety reasons – having the blow dryers suspended from the ceiling eliminates tripping on cords, banging into stuffed drawers that won't close or having to clean cables. It also prevents blow dryers from dropping to the floor breaking or injuring someone," she adds. "It's innovative technology that makes teaching and learning more convenient and controlled."
King says Freestylists are easy to use...just reach up and the dryer goes on, it's light and easy to maneuver around the chair and makes working easier for students. "They feel very empowered using such a high-tech tool and they all want to work in salons that have them. It really should be more saturated in the industry," she explains.
King has over 40 years of experience in the industry - she's worked behind the chair, at private cosmetology schools and is now teaching at a public career tech school. "When I can turn a student from a caterpillar into a butterfly, it's extremely rewarding and that's what keeps me going," she adds.
