Founding Sponsors of The Trade
What we do
We exist to establish one of the most fundamental building blocks of any society, the art and science of hairdressing. In addition to hair & make-up instruction, we train stylists how to run a small business and add value to their surrounding communities. We also offer scholarships domestically to trafficking victims who would like to pursue a carer in cosmetology.
How we do it
We take used shears in on trade towards new ones. These shears are sharpened and either given to the stylists we are training or sold with 100% of the profit going towards our efforts. We organize teams of stylists who travel with us to developing countries to build education centers which focus on both the artistic as well as the business aspect of the hair cutting trade. We focus on training people who are in extreme poverty as a way for them to provide for themselves and their families.
Why it works
Internationally : Education is the only lasting solution. Stylist who have participated in our programs are currently generating enough income to provide for themselves and their families. Establishing micro economies with the trade of hairdressing also serves to elevate the role of women in society which is currently on the forefront of the United Nation’s global agenda. The economic, and social impact we have already experienced has proven to us that our initiatives are providing an effective solution at the root of a far-reaching problem.
Domestically : Many girls have, at one time or another, dreamt of working in the world of beauty. By offering cosmetology training in the US, we hope to give trafficking victims a hope and vision for their future. Helping others in the area of beauty can be a crucial part completing the healing process, and provide a platform for them to tell their story and raise awareness
Help-Portrait
Steven Robertson, Salt Lake City, UT
I met Dionne who lives at a shelter in downtown Salt Lake City and hasn't had a photograph in 20 years. She had never had her make up done. I spent an hour with this wonderful lady and will never ever forget her. Ever :) She made my heart happy because of her gratitude for today. Here she is in her first photo in 20 years.
Animal Lovin'
Justina, Onalaska, WI
I am a pet owner and I love my dog, and all animals. I am constantly looking for ways to help dogs in my community through donating to the Humane Society. By loving and helping animals I am helping a whole other community that many forget about. Animals are just as worthy of love and attention as we humans are! Once my dog gets old enough I fully intend to make him into a therapy dog, and take him around to the hospital so he can spread his love and puppy kisses to the people who need it most.
Toys for Tots
We love hair and we also love giving back to our community via hair! We volunteer our hair and makeup services at the "Senor Santa Fashion Show" every year. All proceeds are donated to collect toys for underprivileged children this Christmas!
Look Good... Feel Better Program
Anne C., Houston, TX
I volunteer with the Look Good... Feel Better program through my local American Cancer Society. As a volunteer, I help cancer patients regain self esteem and confidence in their appearance. We teach women how to use scarves, wigs, makeup and other accessories to address the side effects of treatment.
I have met some of the most amazing women and been truly touched by their stories. The transformation I see during their few hours with me is incredible.
Matter of Trust
Sophia P. Bossier City, La
Our salon is located in an area that has seen the devastation of what oil spills do to our environment. We collect all of our clients' hair clippings and donate them to Matter of Trust. They are turned into Hair Mats and Booms that are used in the clean up of oil spills.
Locks of Love
Annie M. Charlotte, NC
Every year I help organize a Locks of Love event in our community. We offer free haircuts for anyone who wants to donate their hair to this very worthy cause. Locks of Love creates hair pieces for kids who are suffering from hair loss. It is so touching to see children and their parents come out to give back in such a tangible way.
Donated hair is evaluated for its usefulness according to the following
guidelines:
The donated hair must be at least 10 inches (preferably 12") in length
It must be bundled in a pony tail or braid
Hair must be free of bleach. Colored hair and permed is acceptable.
The hair must be clean and dry, placed in a plastic bag, and mailed in a

Fight Colorectal Cancer
Erica L., Cosmetology Student
Lately, I have been working with Fight Colorectal Cancer, an organization based in Washington, D.C., that focuses more on policy and research with regard to conquering colon cancer, the second deadliest cancer affecting both men and women, yet one of the easiest to beat if caught early. I call national corporations to get them interested in partnering with the charity and then pass the information along to my contact in Washington, D.C.
I also tell everyone I know to compel their parents/grandparents/friends/family to get screened for colon cancer if they are 50 or over. I also will be participating in the UNDY 5000 in March for Colon Cancer Awareness Month. A large chunk of the proceeds collected will be left in our local area for folks of screening age who do not have or cannot afford a colonoscopy.
Community Based Giving
Hair International- Palo Alto, CA
For the last 22 years we have gone to Stanford Hospital to cut and style patient's hair. We also hold an annual "Be the Match" bone marrow donor day at the salon. Last year 50 people signed to donate mouth-cells to see if their DNA matches to someone who needs a stem cell transplant.
Since 2008 we've sponsored 24 middle-schoolers enrolled in 'Spark' an after-school program designed to help at-risk kids stay in school.
We partner with local schools to help them put on their annual fashion shows. The list literally goes on and on... It is our belief that you must take an active role in the community which you are based.
TIGI INSPIRATIONAL YOUTH
TIGI is committed to supporting the next generation of hair artists. TIGI Inspirational Youth, now in its 8th year, has developed from an original idea Anthony Mascolo conceived, recognizing the need to educate and inspire the next generation of hairdressers. Anthony’s strong belief in sharing ideas, knowledge, technical know-how and experiences have been utilized into this empowering and exciting training program.
TIGI’s senior Creative Directors and other key TIGI personnel mentor a carefully selected team of 10 young hairdressers taking them on a journey that they often describe as “life-changing”. Over a 6-month period the Inspirational Youth Team are continually filmed and interviewed, giving them increased presentation skills and encouraging good communication. Working together and also spending time together, quickly develops the individual members into a strong and supportive team. Cutting skills are enhanced with a range of training that drives the skills of the team from craftsmanship to artistic strength. Creative development is a crucial part of the mentorship programme and covers session hairdressing, photographic work, model casting, understanding new trends, exposure to key people in the fashion industry and culminating in a show which is compered by Nick Irwin, Akos Bodi and Anthony Mascolo.
During the course the team are taken to art galleries, and given projects to do between training days, researching ideas and information and creating mood boards.
The 2012 Inspirational Youth programme begins a new and exciting phase in the training programme. For the first time the Team are working with students from the London College of Fashion on a project called: “Hair leads the fashion.”
The 10 young fashion designers, all 2011 BA graduates, are designing 2 outfits for each of the hairdressers, using the hairstyles as the starting point. LCF makeup artists and illustrators are also working with the team to help create the total image.
The results of this amazing project will be seen at The Inspirational Youth show which takes place as part of the TIGI Euro-Release to be held in London 20th May 2012.

Frank Arcabascio, Redken Saloon Salon
Redken Saloon Salon sponsors a special canned food drive and offers uplifting makeovers during the holidays to families in need.
Mentoring New Stylists
One of my main focuses for the hair industry is to give back by teaching young professionals and offering my advice as they begin to explore this industry. I always make time to teach student classes at Barristar Beauty School Forum and share my experiences with future professionals.
Homeless Connect
Danielle U.
In times of war, exhausted combat units requiring time to rest and recover were removed from the battlefields to a place of relative security and safety. Today, Stand Down refers to a community-based event designed to help the nation’s estimated 200,000 homeless veterans "combat" life on the streets.
The hand up is made possible each year by the dedication of thousands of volunteers and numerous sponsors. Participants are provided shelter, new sleeping bags and heavy blankets. They are provided with legal and employment services, as well as showers, hygiene products and hair cuts. Health, dental, vision and housing services are available from many providers, including the Lion’s Club Vision Screening Van, VA Vision and fully staffed VA medical tents.
