Secrets of a Lady Boss

Room: Main Stage

Monday, January 27, 2020: 12:30 PM - 1:15 PM

Being a successful hairdresser isn't just about beautiful highlights and chic haircuts! In this segment, Candy Shaw shifts the focus from balayage to business. The Balay Lama discusses the steps she's taken to become a Lady Boss through the lens of four of her talented Sunlights Artisan Team Members. Learn how they've built their businesses and empowered themselves to grow as both educators and people to become Lady Bosses! Of course we will paint a little hair too, but the mission here is to help women (and men) feel confident to become the best version of themselves using the power of the paint brush. Are you ready to find out what it takes to become a Lady Boss and start your own journey to personal AND financial freedom?

Fun Fact: Candy Shaw grew up as the ultimate hair baby as the child of a make up artist and world-champion competition hairdresser. As a little girl, her parents entertained Vidal Sassoon, Paul Mitchell and Horst Rechelbacher as guests in their home (could you just die?!). You can read her hairstory here.

Hair Education

Precision Cutting

Room: 101 A

Saturday, January 25, 2020: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

A class with Cole Thompson will help you return to the salon with not only new ideas but a complete and in depth understanding of technique. The class breaks down precision cutting, to its purest form allowing for high absorption of material. This class is a must for any stylists at all levels.

Cole is actually one of our very favorite hair friends from the very beginning. We met him shortly after he had moved to LA with Sassoon Academy. As fate would have it, he was kind enough to donate his time to go with us to Taylor Andrews Academy in SLC for a charity event and we have been besties ever since. Do yourself a giant favor and make sure you are in this class. If you end up being a lame-o and can’t get there on time, you can always hit up Cole’s online education, Elevation H.

Elements

Room: 101 A

Damn… Hattori Hanzo is coming in HOT with a ton of our favorite cutters!

Texture vs. Race

Room: 202 B

Saturday, January 25, 2020: 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

A movement designed to empower industry beauty professionals with the confidence, knowledge and skill-set to overcome fears related to servicing clients with hair textures different from their own. Because so many experience trepidation when confronted with clients of diverse textures, this class offers insight and skills into how to turn this fear into positive, technique-focused energy. During this transformative session, we will be incorporating texture theory, proper texture language and strategies to build a multi-texture clientele. Hair is hair BUT, the rules of engagement are different. Understanding that hair is FABRIC- not a RACE opens up a whole new world of possibilities and creativity.

The Business of Extensions

Sunday, January 26, 2020: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Adding extension services to your toolbox not only will make your clientele happy, but also your bottom line. We will discuss language, what and how to charge for extensions, ordering on demand vs keeping hair in stock, and more! As the highest service dollar per hour you can do, we will show you why you MUST add hair extensions to your service menu.

Future Trends In Haircutting

Room: 101 A

Sunday, January 26, 2020: 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

This class will be a technique based class. Oscar Bond is one of the giants of the haircutting industry. He has owned multiple salons, a hair academy, worked on the runways of Paris and New York, and has won a Master NAHA award. If you see one class this year, this is the one. Come cut hair with a Master Jedi.

Oscar is truly the kindest and dearest man… not to mention his wife, Wendy, is also crazy talented. We especially love the way Oscar breaks down the cuts but mostly we are there to just bask in his glory. Too creepy for ya?

Curls Gone Wild

Room: 102 C

Sunday, January 26, 2020: 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

This class will showcase very simple cutting and colour technique for clients with curly hair. Blow dry methods for specific curly in addition to excellent product recommendations for the various curly hair types. Curly haired clients will often say they've had negative experiences in the salon due to the stylists not having enough insight into their hair. When they find a stylist who understands how to work with their hair, they become very loyal clients and a long and prosperous relationship .

We asked Marlo Steenman once… Have you ever been the victim of a hair travesty? Her answer: Oh hell ya! I have long curly hair, need I say more? Every haircut I got was a hair travesty! Having naturally curly hair ourselves, we understood that life as kids. We can’t wait to see how Marlo is helping change the experience for all our curly comrades.
