What inspired you to enter the beauty industry?
When I first attempted to leave my parent’s home in search of a higher education and a career, I attended Ohio State University with the goal of graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. I intended to pursue a career in green energy with a focus on wind power. The farther I got into the program and the more engineers I interviewed, it became clear to me that I was not in the right profession to achieve my personal and environmental goals.
So I came home from college and spent some time soul searching. Thanks to my wonderful and patient family I stumbled across Aveda and it has been a perfect fit. Every day I find deep satisfaction in the art I create and the connections I make. I want to make a name for myself in this industry so I can help draw attention to some of our world’s problems with the environment and “ideal beauty”.
I believe competing is important because…
It gives you a project to express yourself with and causes you to push yourself to try new and crazy things. It forces you to stay up to date with the latest trends and when you win it gives you exposure.
I would trade my best friend before I would live without this product…
Aveda’s stress fix oil
In five years, my dream is to be…
A NAHA winner, a master stylist at a salon, doing editorial work, leading a green campaign, and maybe working my way to being a creative director at Aveda.
Who are you most inspired by and why?
My Aunt Rickie (Hughes-Tureson). She is a kick-ass cosmetologist (Visible Changes – Houston) who worked her tail off every day at the salon. She was that girl you couldn’t dislike if you tried and was always top of her salon ready to go the extra mile. Whenever I had down time at school or a bad day I would sit there and ask myself, “What would Aunt Rickie be doing right now?”.
What was your reaction to finding out you were in the final 6?
I was overjoyed! I may have hopped up and down, done a little happy dance and called everyone I knew to thank them for voting for me. Of course I had put a lot of hard work in to getting my votes and obsessively watched my place and my competitions. Why hope for the best when you can make it happen with a little work?
