Mia Bajlovic
My name is Mia aka madewithmia and I am a licensed salon professional with 8 years behind the chair experience offering a full range of hair to makeup services. Representing from Bergen county, NJ, I am a Master Designer and independent Educator with a fine love for Redken and ALL things beauty. My goal is to help people see themselves as beautiful as I see them, one head at a time! Using the love I have for my career to allow my inner light to shine and radiate for all to see!
You have a unique story that lead you to attending beauty school. Do you remember your first day – what was going through your head?
Oh man…. my first day I went in everyone was doing finger waves…. I got in about an hour later than everyone else (because I had to take public transportation) and I remember being crazy nervous like are these girls gonna like me? Are they gonna try me? Will they accept me? And I immediately jumped onto this mannequin head and banged out these finger waves like I was a pro and literally forgot about how I felt if anyone would accept me. It literally became all about the hair at that very moment!
What advice would Mia today tell Little Mia on her graduation day from Cosmo school?
I would tell young Mia to chill… Chill out don’t worry so much about others and what they’re doing and focus on yourself and your new career, cause baby girl you’re a star!
What do you think the biggest struggle stylists are experiencing in the industry today?
I’d say the biggest struggle stylists are experiencing today is “competition”. Since social media has become so huge for our industry people see what others are posting, what others are charging, and what others are formulating or using when behind the chair. I say BANANAS! Do you honey! Be creative and be yourself. Charge what you believe your value is and don’t worry so much what other people are using or what their techniques are. People are attracted to uniqueness and the real you. SO SHINE ON HUNTY! Be an artist!
Who is your Hair-Hero?
This is kind of a hard question… I’ve learned so much from so many amazing people and educators. Yet, if I had to choose one person it would be Deb McAnn from Redken. She became my hero when she broke Color Theory down to me in such an easy, well spoken manner. On top of that she was so confident and owned the room. I didn’t want to stop learning. I was able to understand certain things that was questionable to me in the past in such a way that I immediately felt confident in my craft. I remember taking some classes with her and being like man…. I aspire to be like this badass woman one day.
Something most people don’t know about you.
Most people don’t know that even though I may look and dress like a rocker chick, I love old school rap and can two step my way into any hip hop joint. Hahaha I just love to do that thang hip mama make it roll what ya pop lock….feel me?
What traumatic hairstyle have you been guilty of rocking?
Oh man….. well I grew up in Bergen county NJ ,so growing up we ALL had the baby hairs gelled down with a tooth brush look , along side 3 pounds of gel and mousse scrunched into my hair, diffused until my curls were crispier than a saltine cracker. On top of that I would create a “poof” right on the front of my head …. cause why not right?….
3 shows or education events you won’t be missing this next year?
I’d love to attend a few classes at the Redken Exchange!!
Words to live by…
“Find something you love to do so much that you’d do it for free… then find someone who would pay you for it. -DJ AM”
I knew I was a Hair Nerd when…
I taught my first class ever…. After spending time with other people who love and appreciate this craft as much as I do I instantly knew I was a nerdy for hair. Can’t get enough of it! Having a fellow stylist value your information and working together to grow our passion is just the best feeling. Anytime I can share my knowledge or learn from another person in this field I grow as a person and as an artist.
