OHIO Alert

Those crazy states are up to their "licensing shenanigans", again... We recently received this information from the Professional Beauty Association and felt it was important to share because we know you love this industry as much as we do!   Even when we don't make the states in question our homes, it is important to be aware of legislation that might set a precedent.

Changes are coming to the Cosmetology Profession in Ohio, proposed legislation has been introduced in both the House and Senate!! Here are the facts: In Ohio, the required number of hours for a cosmetology license is 1500. In order to work in a salon alone, one must obtain a "manager license" which requires one year of work experience or 300 hours of course work. The law and rules require that a person with a manager license be physically present in a salon at all times absent two breaks per day.  (See ORC 4713.41 and OAC 4713-13-03).

Remember when Indiana  and New Hampshire decided cosmetology licenses were unnecessary?  They wanted to deregulate the industry and let consumers figure it out through "trial and error".

Now Ohio is working to make changes that will affect the lives of our newest Hair Nerds.  The goal is to help create gainfully employed 1500 hour licensees, but Elizabeth Murch, one of PBA's dedicated State Captains, needs your help to get it done!

Currently there is a bill in Ohio, House Bill 453, that seeks to make many changes to cosmetology law in Ohio. Click here to read the full text of the bill. In July, the Ohio Board of Cosmetology voted for a resolution to remove the manager license requirement from the current rule. This month, the Board rescinded its resolution.   Elizabeth needs YOUR help regarding current and proposed changes to regulations on licensees in Ohio.
