Oscars Red Carpet Review
Author: John McCorkmick
Our Red Carpet correspondent, John McCormick, shares his favorite looks from the 86th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday.
Passion is born, then inspired. Celebrity hair stylist, John McCormick’s mother would tell the tale that her son picked up a brush before he could raise a fork. Trained in New York for hairstyling, John has styled clients from across the country, working in salons from New York City and San Francisco before making his home in Los Angeles.
John’s mantra is “If the eyes are the window to the soul, then hair is the doorway to your personality”. When not behind his chair, John can be found around Hollywood styling for television, film and Red Carpet events. He’s currently styling hair on the #1 Daytime show “The Young and the Restless” and has worked on various other show including “X Factor” and “Days Of Our Lives”.
To we Red Carpet devotees, it’s a sad time when the Oscars roll into town. It marks the end of “Awards Season” in Hollywood. Sure we still have events nearly every night in this town, but nothing ever comes close to the Academy Awards! And this year didn’t disappoint.
All the stars were out and there was some amazing hair! And a headband that I think has it’s own twitter now. Lupita Nyong’o and her masterfully placed headband will probably go down in Oscar Hair history! But let’s not forget her perfect sculpted coif that made the look an instant classic.
Speaking of classics, Sandra Bullock channeled her inner screen goddess with those beautiful, soft waves and delicate highlights.
Laura Dern showed off the most amazing sun kissed strawberry blond! Fun and flirty layers showed that sometimes the even a relaxed, tousled style is red carpet worthy.
Stealing the Oscars show is no easy task, but Diva Bette Midler had all of Dolby Theater misty eyed with her beautiful performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings”. But before she hit the stage, she showed off her simply chic, effortless do! Go Miss M!
Penelope Cruz knocked it out of the park with her Audrey Hepburn inspired look. Elegant, classic, beautiful. Sometimes, less is more.
The men of the Oscars made a major showing in the hair department. Classic mens grooming rocked the runway from Chris Hemworth, Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zac Efron, just to name a few. It’s great to see the men bring style to an event.
Maria Menounos, who we love on Extra and Dancing with the Stars, showed us that just like the Ombre, the braid is here to stay. Soft, face framing and unconstructed, Maria is right on trend!
And did someone mention trends! Liza Minnelli sported a fun pop of neon blue! While pastels and muted tones are making there way into fashion forward hair trends, an unexpected burst of color from a classic star is simply fun on the red carpet!
Finally, Kristen Bell was an effortless beauty in a chignon that we all know took hours to perfect, yet stunningly simple. And let’s talk color, her multi tonal blond is near perfection!
So that’s a wrap for Oscar 2014. A great night of glam for fashionista’s everywhere.
**Nerd Note** We love that Lupita Nyong’o thanks her Glam Squad. Our favorite part is the raw emotion you see when she talks about them. It seems Ted Gibson is right… Beauty really does Change Lives..
