We had the opportunity to chat with Diego Raviglione to discuss his role as mentor for Team I.C.A.N. for P&G Professional.   Diego is so passionate about our industry and the  future "up and coming" artists. When talking to him, you can feel how genuine and excited he truly is for what is to come.

We cannot wait to meet him at The Raw Awards held on June 3, 2012 at Premiere Orlando !

How did the opportunity to mentor Team I.C.A.N. come into play?

Fabio Sementilli approached me to mentor Team P&G for the RAW Awards. I am the Artistic Director for Bellus Academy and a Wella Top Stylist and have had a lot of experience working with students and young stylists. I am very passionate about mentoring for competition work and very excited to work with this team.

What values are you committed to as a mentor?

People think the technical ability is where it ends, although it is important it’s a small part. I want to help stylists who possesses passion, drive and integrity to become future leaders within our industry.

What do you hope to give to these young stylist by mentoring them?

I want to give them a win working selflessly as a team and end off better than we started. I hope each of their experiences will be ones they will never forget and will launch them into the beliefs of giving back and mentoring others one day.

To create an environment where creativity can thrive, what’s the first thing you do?

The first day we created mood boards to really explore within and find out who they really are. The saying “Work outside of the box” is one that I truly do not agree with…if someone is passionate about color but I make them focus on upstyling or cutting, we would not get the results. You have to look within to truly find what you are passionate about to create. So we audited their work and really explored their passions to place them perfectly within the team. I am very proud of the work they have created.

How does mentoring help established stylists?

Having been in this industry for 28 years. I have had the opportunities of working in all elements of this industry. I have learned that when you surround yourself with passionate driven people you stay passionate and driven. Students and young stylists have that fearless and excited energy that we tend to loose over the years. I love that kind of energy around me. And being able to be a part of shaping what we need and giving back to an industry that has been so good to me is so very rewarding.

What qualities do you look for in young stylists?

In this generation of entitlement, it is sometimes hard to find stylists willing to put in the hard work required to be successful in our industry. There is no easy road. So when I do come across a up & coming stylists with high levels of commitment and passion I want to help them with the struggles I know they will face on their journey. Being a mentor is a must to help our industry stay strong.

What is your vision for RAW?

I envision us WINNING! Haha! My vision is for each team member to have that moment of impact. I remember back when I was in school, I witnessed a show by Sukis in Regina, Canada at a Hair Show. This show had such an impact on me that at that moment I knew I had found my passion and knew without a doubt I had chose the right profession.  TrendVision is a show that still gives me this feeling time and time again. Nothing touches it! So I want each team member to be in this moment completely and really take it all in. This will be a moment in their life they will never forget and I am so honored to be able to share in this journey.

WHAT IS RAW? BTC’s brand new hair competition! Seven teams of young stylists will compete to win $10,000 and the cover of the next issue of behindthechair On Papermagazine. Backed by a manufacturer and mentored by the biggest names in the industry, these teams are tasked with the challenge of creating an ENTIRE hair show—cutting, coloring, lighting, choreography, fashion styling, makeup and everything else you can imagine—from scratch, and present their work to a LIVE audience! Once their show is complete, they’ll face a live critique from our panel of judges: Ken Paves, Ellen Rakieten, Garren…and YOU! That’s right, YOUR TEXT VOTES mean you’re also on the judging panel!
