Angela of L.A. Hair

A  few months ago on a Thursday night I sat down on the sofa, Tea in one hand, phone in the other with Twitter & Facebook queued up next to me... ready to start posting about what I was going to see. It was time for the much talked about debut of L.A. Hair. A WE TV reality series starring a salon crew of talented and hysterical hairstylists run by Celebrity stylist Kim Kimble.

No doubt the list of Celebrity clients that frequent the salon are interesting enough to make you want watch the show. But it is the cast who keeps you coming back for more! For one straight entertaining hour, my partner Richie Romanand I were shocked by the drama and bizarre antics that occurred yet at the same time we continued to burst out into laughter!

There were many different thoughts that traveled through my mind like:  “I need to work at Kimble Hair Studio because Angela looks like someone I would really hang out with."  I also thought:  “Wow, whatever hair technique Angela just did, her clients hair looks absolutely amazing!”

Finally thinking:  “OMG Angela is hilarious!”  Then I realized what it was… I was fascinated with Angela Christine Stevens! Because of her, I have been tuning in every week to see what she was coming with. Naturally, as I continued #NerdStalking her, I learned why I liked her so much.

She’s originally from the East Coast, she trained in beauty school overseas, then she moved to Los Angeles chasing after something much bigger! And she got it! She is talented & genuinely funny. The show has the "it" factor that makes you thirst for more, but I have to say, Angela is the breakout star here.

She is what I refer to as  "The Karen" of Will & Grace! ..."The Sandra" of 227! ...And my newest reference, "The Angela" of L.A.Hair!  So I had no choice. I had to get to know her better. And after talking to her, my newest reference is fitting & my respect level has skyrocketed!

Angela, you hail from “The Windy City” Chi-Town and honed your craft of hairstyling in Italy… Los Angeles must have been totally different from those places. What made you decide to journey to California?

I came to California on a random vacation, and after 5 days of meeting ambitious young people like myself who were chasing dreams I could have never fathomed, I decided to move. 3 months later I said goodbye to my home, family, and vast clientele and settled in North Hollywood.

That's awesome. Lot's of people talk the talk but you walked the walk! How did you originally hear about Kimble Hair Studio?

I was just doing research on well known Black hair salons for a job  and Kimble was one of the only ones that stood out to me. I didn't realize she was the same person that styled Beyonce and had her own products until I did more research.

The team at Kimble Hair Studio has had a roster of celebrity clients for a quite a while! And now with the big hit reality show “L.A. Hair” on WE TV you all have become household names as well as daily conversations in salons across America. What can you tell people about the salon when the cameras are not on?

We definitely don't talk as much when the cameras are off and we aren't usually in there at the same times. Kim styles clients all over the world, Dontay and I are on location quite a bit these days and Terry has a limited work week due to his education company. When we are together tho it's always an interesting time.

I bet it is! Well, in the 1st season of the show you all had to move out of the smaller salon into a temporary salon while waiting for the new bigger salon to open. What was that like for you personally?

Things were really hectic for me. All the moving and working across town in addition to being filmed and balancing out personal things was a lot. I gradually adjusted tho and it turned out to not be for as long as we all anticipated. Thank God!

Like me, your friends and family must really enjoy seeing you on television. So tell me, what do you think when you’re watching yourself?

For the most part I enjoyed watching myself. I would probably want to be my friend lol. I was overly critical of my hair and makeup tho. I was also not proud of my heated moments. I can go from 0-60 really quickly and it clearly showed on tv. Even the not so proud moments were a true reflection of who I am and I'm the most proud that I'm not afraid to be myself regardless of who's watching.

That's good because we can be overly critical of ourselves at times. But you have styled behind the chair, editorial, and celebrities (like Actress/Rap Sensation EVE and Actress Tia Mowery.) With all the different things you do, do you have preference when it comes to doing hair?

I like to do things that challenge me. If I do the same thing all the time I lose excitement for the job. Usually high profile clients are interested in trying new looks so it helps me stay inspired by working with different people. As long as the end result is hot, I'm happy.

When I do an interview, I cater to our readers as well as all the Hair Husband’s out there that marry a stylist and have to deal with our crazy & exciting industry. What kind of guy would be the perfect Hair Husband for Angela?

That's a tough question to answer because in still trying to figure that out myself. But I would say I need a guy who is equally busy and ambitious so that my success doesn't compete or overshadow his. My perfect husband would also have to be very understanding and laid back. I can be a but high strung and sometimes I need someone to calm down my situation.

Lastly, I think my perfect husband would have to be strong, a lot stronger than me. I have  been told I have an alpha personality  and can intimidate easily, so a man who is confident and can take the lead means a lot to me.

Girl, you have so much going on with balancing your clients and a hit show...but I'm sure you have set aside some long term goals. Where do you want to see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself happy mainly. Nothing is more important than my happiness and peace of mind. I'd like to be mentoring girls in a large capacity, maybe a few salons, some connection with brands or products, and at least 10 more stamps on my passport. Last but not least I see myself with a family husband, kids, the dog and everything.

Well the rate you that are going, you will get everything you desire. Keep doing your thing! I have to say I was anticipating this interview, and you really lived up to everything I was hoping for…& more. We are enjoying season 1 and can’t wait for season 2. Thanks so much for chatting with me Angela.
