Since its humble beginnings in 1989, NAHA finalists and industry elite have brought this iconic photographic beauty competition to new heights year after year. NAHA continues to recognize the beauty industry’s most talented artists and advance the careers of stylists around the world. Nothing makes us happier than meeting artists we REALLY want to root for… Good people who love the industry, value education and aren’t afraid to put in the hard work.

What one word describes how you felt when you found out you were a finalist?

Floored. (I literally collapsed in a humbled heap on the floor.)

How does competing help you as an artist?

It’s very vulnerable putting yourself out there y’know, and the moment I thought “I’m not going to submit for NAHA” I knew I had to, for the sake of my own fight against my fear of failing.

Beyond hair, what other creative outlets do you have?

I come from a very creative family and when we’re together we can’t help but surround ourselves with beauty in some form – art galleries, architecture, wild forests, film or good food. But personally I actually love making simple and delicate jewelry and working with leather. I’ve always been enamored with the details of how we adorn ourselves.

Tell us your life story in 3 sentences.

Born and raised in Britain, moved to California at 25, met and married a handsome yank, stuck around. Started dreaming again, discovered there was an Aveda Fredric’s Institute a little ways south, started the driving the 500 miles a week I needed to make my week work. Discovered what I was created for, won’t ever look back.

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t doing hair? I’d probably be an art teacher like my Dad.

What’s your biggest fear in life or your career?

I’m a perfectionist and sometimes that can really catch up with me and my desire to do excellent work. Self-criticism is a hard one to reason with and robs us of confidence and joy – naturally I don’t want to miss out on either of those!

Real life advice to someone entering the world of cosmetology.

I have this poster I’ve moved across the world with that says ‘stop competing – start collaborating.’ I try to keep humility and community at the heart of all my encounters, whether with clients, co-workers or those educating me.

I knew I was a Hair Nerd when…

I realized I’d read my entire Salon Fundamentals Cosmetology Text Book through 7 times because I just loved learning about it all so much!
