Janine Jarman
Prior to founding Hairroin Salon in 2005, Janine was already established as one of LA’s leading authorities on hair styling, lending her talents to Hollywood stars, television shows, print campaigns, runway shows and more. She later gained a national following as one of the stars of Bravo’s popular TV series, Shear Genius, recognized for her inspired hair creations. Janine currently serves as the West Coast spokesperson for Sebastian Professional and is a member of the national Sebastian Design team.
The Hair Nerds: We have entered the holiday season which reminds us all to give a little more generously. How do you use your talents to help those in need?
Janine Jarman: I volunteer for the Beauty Bus Foundation and the Los Angeles Youth Network.
2010 Beauty Professional of the Year: Janine Jarman. Jarman, the owner of Hairroin Salon in Hollywood, Calif., was the first hairdresser to go on a Beauty Bus visit and has been on more visits than any other beauty professional volunteer.
The Hair Nerds: Describe the salon when you first purchased it.
Janine Jarman: The salon was run down with a void of hair dressers. Within just a few months, we turned it around and gathered some really talented people and have become like family along the way.
The Hair Nerds: Congratulations on your recent move to Space 1520! We were thrilled to be there to celebrate. What motivated looking for a new location?
Janine Jarman: When Space 15 Twenty was built, I wanted us to be there. I told everyone if a salon went in before us I would just die. We were ready for our own space that we chose and built out to our specifications rather then just occupying a failed salon. It also doesn't hurt working and cross promoting with the other brands and urban outfitters in the center.
The Hair Nerds: What do you find the biggest challenge to be when leading such a large diverse group of stylists?
Janine Jarman: I made a promise to myself to lead my team and treat my stylists with respect and push them to meet goals to succeed in this industry. I always hated how salon owners would refer to their stylists as if they were another species and weren't open to learning new skills. I strive daily to be able to speak to each and every one of my team member's learning and working styles.
The Hair Nerds: What can we expect to see form Hairroin Salon in the coming months? Years?
Janine Jarman: Keep an eye out for the uprising of education and editorial work from us.
The Hair Nerds: Your team does set and on-site work, frequently. What is the nuttiest thing that has ever happened while you were on set?
Janine Jarman: I would say the strangest on set experience was probably getting to shoot with a real life elephant.
The Hair Nerds: Top Stylists you would love to work with:

The Hair Nerds: Share your philosophies on saving/ investing/ retirement?
Janine Jarman:
Live within your means.
Save 20% always.
Buy property.
Plan and be prepared for splurges and vacations.
The Hair Nerds: Best piece of advice you were ever given about owning a salon...
Janine Jarman: Owning a salon is a choice... you have no one to blame for success, hard work or failure... besides yourself.
The Hair Nerds: What is the biggest mistake you see stylists make? Salon Owners?
Janine Jarman: We are day makers, servants to our clients and sometimes that is forgotten. One of the biggest mistakes I see hairstylist make is not treating it like the proper career that it is. Being on time, professional, and having great attitudes are a must!
The Hair Nerds: You have done such an incredible job of branding Hairroin and yourself as a stylist... How large a role has "new media" played in your marketing plan?
Janine Jarman: It is a skill that takes a lot of discipline, but it works and I am very lucky to have people on my team who are amazing at it.
The Hair Nerds: On a perfect day I spend it.....
Janine Jarman: With my husband and my dogs... entertaining for friends and family
The Hair Nerds: How do you maintain balance from such a busy day to day?
Janine Jarman: I used to spend everyday at the salon, but over time that can wear on you. I made a commitment to myself to “turn off” on Sundays and give full attention to my husband, myself and of course my dogs. I also try to leave the salon by 5pm every Friday to enjoy life and host a “open door” game night of great people, food and wine.
The Hair Nerds: What do people find most surprising about you?
Janine Jarman: I love to entertain. I am hosting my first Thanksgiving celebration for my family and I am so excited. I have lived in a garage for a long time. Now I have a real house, with windows and everything!
The Hair Nerds: What is your next BIG goal?
Janine Jarman: I am enjoying right now, but my family is always like “What’s next Janine?” ha-ha. They keep me going. I come from a long line of hard workers and will never be done.
The Hair Nerds: We love Hair Husbands! Will you tell us about yours?
Janine Jarman: We met in church camp, we were both there for very different reasons, he was a bad boy and I didn’t really care too much for him at the time. 12 years later we reconnected through my sister and here we are. He pushes me and give me balance. He keeps me sane.
