Kaitlin Butler
Katie is one kick ass female taking over this industry. Don’t let her petite stature fool you, Katie is a force to be reckoned with. She has been creating haircutting videos and killer haircuts for years and is now shaping the young minds of future hairdressers at Bellus Academy in San Diego, Ca. If you haven’t heard of her before, keep your eye peeled cause she will be teaching and popping up everywhere this next year. If you’re lucky enough to be educated by her, let it all soak in because it will absolutely make you a better hairdresser. I know that I’m a better person for just knowing her and lucky enough to get to call her my friend.
Describe a day in the life of Katie…
Wake up, chug all the coffees while I attempt to put myself together. Do work online. Chug some more coffee on my way to Bellus. Teach some hair things. Go home do more work while I watch tv. Remind myself to eat dinner. Go to bed. My life isn’t too exciting.
Something most people don’t know about you.
I don’t know! I’m a pretty open book. Maybe my favorite color is purple? Or maybe that I have the hugest crush on Lenny kravitz?
What advice would Katie today tell Little Katie on her graduation day from beauty school?
Get your shit together! Stop being such a shithead.
What are your top 3 favorite social/editing apps?
The only one I use is ColorStory. It’s my absolute favorite.
What do you think the biggest struggle stylists are experiencing in the industry today?
Finding a salon/space that is going to push you to become a better stylist and get advanced education. I feel like a lot of hairstylists get complacent and think they are done learning.
If people follow you on Instagram, they’ll see that you post a lot of music you’re currently listening too. Who are your top 5 musical influences and why?
SHIT! This one is really hard, my favorites change everyday. I listen to so much different music. BUT punk, post punk and new wave have played a huge part in my life and have influenced every aspect of it.
lately, I have been into……
The sound.
Squeeze.
The vibrators.
Tubeway army.
Depeche Mode is always my all time favorite to listen to when I cut hair or just to listen to anytime.
Who is your Hair-Hero?
Sally Rogerson! She’s so incredible at everything. Great hair cutter, amazing educator and just an over all bad ass human being.
And of course Tim Hartley because he’s a total badass and I wish one day I could be able to cut hair like him.
What is your doughnut and/or taco of choice?
Tofu potato mushroom taco from pokez in San Diego.
What traumatic hairstyle have you been guilty of rocking?
I wouldn’t consider any of my hairstyles traumatic, I would have all of them again. But I did rock a rat tail for like 5 or 6 years.
3 shows or education events you won’t be missing this next year?
There’s so much going on. I’m going to try to hit up as many things as I can this next year.
I knew I was a Hair Nerd when…
I joined hairbrained back in 2009. Definitely a game changer in nerding out on hair stuff.
