Sarah Adams
We have quietly stalked Sarah for years, been instagram friends and recently got to finally meet in person, eat popcorn, watch Baby Yoda with her family and Nina Kovner and enjoy a simple moment.
It’s always exciting when your IG friends become IRL friends and couldn’t believe we hadn’t interviewed her for all of you to appreciate her journey as much as we have. So… without further adiue… meet Sarah Adams.
In three sentences tell us who is Sarah Adams?
Sarah Adams is an artist.
Sarah Adams is a lover of things wild and free.
Sarah Adams is introverted and shy yet brave to the extreme.
What advice would Sarah today tell Little Sarah on her first day of beauty school?
You’re in for a wild ride babe. Get to work.
Do you remember the moment you realized that sustainability was important to you? What were your first steps in the process of sharing it with others?
I had an AHA moment for sure! I took a leg shaving with a straight razor class by this rad lady named Alex at Portland Razor Company. Something clicked in me that if I committed and did shaving her way at home and in my business, I could honestly never ever have to buy another razor or throw one away again. Imagine that! NOT buying disposable products in this day and age seems nearly impossible but it’s not. Changing your own sustainability habits, even just one, really can make an impact. My commitment to this shaving method unexpectedly increased my value and my integrity immensely behind the chair. We are set to release my own detailing razor designed in collaboration with Portland Razor Company. Later this year you can expect online education on how to maintain their razor blades in the hopes to help solve this problem and eliminate the more than 2 billion disposable razors thrown away in just the USA alone every year.
A product you would.. gasp.. pay retail for?
I like good businesses to stay in business. I do pay retail price for a lot of quality things.
Portland Razor Co Straight Razors/ Strop
Mizutani Shears
Crown works Crystal Comb
Mason Pearson Hairbrush
EveLom Cleansing Balm
Unite 7 Seconds Detangling Spray
You’re a mom, wife, business owner, educator and so much more. What’s your secret to balancing it all?
I just laughed so hard I choked at this question. Who said what about my shit being balanced?
Balance requires being still more than I am personally comfortable with. I am a person who takes big risks. I screw up but I have also tasted victory. I love my home life but I am madly in love with experiencing people and cities all over the world. I have had immense growth and opportunity as I have had dry spells. I am detailed as fuck but I can be a mess and leave dirty dishes in the sink. I don’t ever think twice nor apologize for leaving my family to travel and make art. I’ve gotten lost wandering. I have run into old friends by surprise in far away countries. I have lost friends and family in my discovery of self. Amidst all of this beautiful chaos, I feel blessed and honored to have had a 16 year partnership and the joy of a child. My kid thinks I’m famous because I do famous people’s hair. This is my best life. What more could I ask for?
If you were a drink, what would you be and why?
Truth serum.
People tell me the craziest shit I have no idea why. Also, If I respect you, I don’t hold back from telling it like it is.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I drive a wake boat, and I power lift at the gym.
Biggest struggle in the industry and how do you think we change it?
I believe our multi billion dollar beauty industry can and should become THE leaders in sustainability for the future of our planet.
OOOOOH and another thing because that truth serum thing is kicking in…..
If I am being brutally honest, I see way too many examples of “using people”, taking place in our community. Entities and people taking advantage of people. Furthermore I see artists putting themselves out there and willingly getting taken advantage of just for a perceived image. We must value ourselves as artists. Stylists please advance yourself beyond our society and community’s “image” of what greatness is and work on becoming the true and great person that YOU are. Work at becoming great at what YOU do and being great at how YOU care for yourself and others. I promise you the payout is higher.
If you weren’t doing hair, what would you be doing?
I would do photography or be teaching Sex Education! I feel like I’m often a resource for those touchy topics.
I knew I was a Hair Nerd when…
I always will be, and always have been one of the nerdiest nerds there ever could be. When it comes to beauty I started with a mission to learn it ALL. Because of that mentality, I’ve been entrusted to style hair for people with billion dollar images. I have directed huge runway teams for famous fashion designers. I can straight razor a face while I hand tie hair extensions. (Just kidding.) I’ve spent nearly 20 years in the industry. I call on mentors new and old still to this day.
Where can people stalk Sarah?
Tik ToK is my new obsession.
All social platform handles are @sarahadamshair
I eat PHO in every city I visit.
Portland days off I am having a Tumeric CBD latte at GRÖN or wailing in a private room with friends at Voicebox Karaoke.
