The Thirst Project

The thing that is most striking about Eden Sassoon isn’t the fact that she is gorgeous or a killer business woman or even that she is the daughter of the legendary beauty icon, Vidal Sassoon… although all those statements are true.

What is so incredible about Eden is her intense drive to give back to not only the beauty industry but the world.  Her heart is enormous and full of love for all humans.

50 years ago, Eden’s father revolutionized the beauty industry by creating a new standard for hair care in the 1960’s. His goal was to make women’s true, individual beauty shine. Over 50 years later, Eden has invigorated the family legacy by modernizing a contemporary salon experience. Following in her father’s tradition of giving back, Eden has partnered with The Thirst Project to support their mission to provide clean drinking water in impoverished regions.

We were recently introduced to  the 2nd Generation Sassoon/Thirst Project partnership and immediately touched.  As you read about the project,  imagine doing your job without water.  We as hairdressers rely on this life saving liquid to create beauty.  So the next time you are rinsing your client out or in our case letting the #HairBabies play #HairNerd,  think about what water means to those without access to it.

Fast Facts

  • 1 in 8 people on our planet don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water and proper sanitization. That is almost a BILLION… with a B..

  • 4,400 children die every day from diseases caused by contaminated water. So essentially 1 little one every 15 seconds.

  • 80% of all global diseases are water-borne and result from drinking contaminated water.

  • These diseases kill more than 2.2 million people every year.

  • The average distance a woman walks to collect water is 3.75 miles.

The task of water-collecting falls on young girls, leaving them no time or energy for school. Without an education, it is nearly impossible to break the cycle of poverty. How many of us gripe because of our “grueling schedule” ? Imagine waking up and walking almost 4 miles for dirty, disease ridden water before you even start your day. Lack of access to water prevents every other element of community development from taking place effectively. Water empowers agriculture, education and micro-finance. Without water, there is no life.

We weren’t even aware of this situation and have a feeling there are plenty of others in the same boat. What is so tragic about the whole deal is the water is there. It’s right below the ground, but for most communities in these developing nations, they simply can’t reach it because they can’t afford to drill down to it. Water is a human right! Together, we can raise awareness and build wells. It starts with us. It starts with you. Join the 2nd Generation Sassoon/Thirst Project partnership and show the world what a difference the beauty industry can make. #HairChangesEverything

The Thirst Project is the world’s leading YOUTH water activism organization. This movement of high school and college students builds freshwater wells in developing nations and impoverished communities to provide people with safe, clean water. The Thirst Project is a non-profit organization that travels across the United States speaking at schools to educate students about the global water crisis and challenging them to fundraise to build wells. One hundred percent of all public donations go directly to funding freshwater wells on the ground. The organization is really unique in that they have a private group of donors who fund one hundred percent of the organization’s “overhead” so they can make this guarantee to the public. In just five years, The Thirst Project has activated more than 300,000 students on 320 campuses across the United States, and they have raised 8 million dollars, one hundred percent of which has been used to give more than 260,000 people in twelve countries safe, clean water. This weekend as hairdressers from all over the country come together to celebrate the 25th Annual North American Hairstyling Awards, Eden will host a special announcement celebration of her partnership with The Thirst Project.

We can’t wait to share how you can be involved.  You know the Nerds have already found a way to sneak in and will be live tweeting and posting on Instagram.  Get ready Nerds…. Let’s change the world!
