Staying sane in 2020

Hello New Year’s!! As 2020 begins not only a new year, but a new decade… and also a new Hair Nerd’s. With the fun adventure set before us, there are a few things I realized that I need to keep myself sane.

I can sometimes be a “fly by the seat of your pants” kinda girl…. but most days, I need structure, a plan and time to prepare.

Here’s a few things I have found keep me healthy, happy and able to keep it all together.

Organization

If I’m not organized, I can’t work and it feels like there’s a 2 year old inside of me about to have an epic meltdown in the frozen aisle of the Whole Foods. Usually, in about October, I start searching for my new year’s planner and other fun things that are going to help me keep my life together.

This year I found the cutest planner that incorporates things I’m interested in, so I have all my info in one place. You can find mine here, and they have so many cute options I’m sure you’ll find the perfect one for you, too.

Most people are all digital, but apparently I’m stuck in the dark ages and still hang onto my business receipts (unless I can have them emailed to me, of course). This makes tax time a little easier knowing I have everything in one place and don’t have to dig out crumpled up receipts at the bottom of my purse, cause lets be honest… we only clean those out about once a year. I found mine super cheap here, but colors may vary and I was really hoping for a pink one.

Comfortable Shoes

Yes, I used to be that girl that thought she could wear heels all day at a hair show. Well, I’m not… and major props to the ones that can.

I have found over the years that what makes a successful hair show for us, is being able to cover it all, and we cant do that if our feet hurt.

I love everything from Dr Marten’s and have found that they are a true investment. They last forever, only get more comfortable as you wear them and go with everything.

If you are looking for a comfortable heel, Dr Marten’s are the way to go - I currently love these

Self Care

Self-care looks different for everyone and I urge you to find those things that bring you joy, relaxation and make you love yourself a little bit more.

My version of self-care happens mostly in the bathroom. Bubble baths, washing my hair, putting lotion on my body and skin care.

My skin care routine has become a huge part of what makes me feel better, inside and out. My go-to brands that have made huge improvements on my trouble spots are Image Skincare and Skin Regimen.

Both are professional beauty brands with high quality ingredients and worth every penny… and invest in the travel sizes too. It makes traveling easier when you know that TSA won’t throw out your $100 face cream.

*Please note, only buy from verified Amazon pages or directly from the company to guarantee authenticity of product.

Fur-Babies

Veruca (grey), Oli (white) and Fiona (level 2 brown)

I know what you’re thinking, they’re the cutest things you’ve ever seen in your life.

These three make my world go round, and you might think that fur-children belong under self-care, but for me, these are my reasons for waking up everyday and why I look forward to coming home from trips and shows.

They 100% make sure I stay sane.

Food & Movement

I love food. I love eating food, I love smelling food… I hate cooking food, but am finding it more fun as I try new recipes.

A few years ago I cut out all animal products from my diet and haven’t looked back. I call myself “very vegetarian” because at home I’m 100% vegan, but sometimes it’s just really hard to find options when eating out and I never want to be that person that huffs and makes it hard for others to eat out with me. So yea, I might have some pizza or a pancake.

Food can be a sore subject for many, and can trigger a lot of self-image issues. I’ve had a long, hard battle with food, and still do, but find that when I’m truly fueling my body, and drinking water, I can take on the day.

Same goes with a little exercise.

By no means am I fit, but a nice walk mid-day can almost make any problem go away. It doesn’t fix the leaky faucet or make my student loans disappear, but that fresh air and feel of my blood pumping puts my mind on something else and helps me sleep better at night.

Everyone “stays sane” differently, but these are just a few things I have found help me not feel so crazy, and I hope you find that they can help you too.
